Quick answer
Output recovered, but domestic demand stayed weak
Industrial output growth recovered to 5.2% year over year and manufacturing PMI improved to 49.8. Retail sales growth eased to 0.4%, while January-August fixed asset investment fell 7.2%. The production rebound was not matched by stronger domestic demand.
What changed in August
Production rebounded after July
Industrial value added at enterprises above the designated size rose 5.2% year over year, up from 4.5% in July. This improvement reverses the previous slowdown, but one stronger month does not establish a sustained recovery. Real production growth is not directly comparable with nominal retail or trade growth.
Consumption and investment remained the constraint
Retail growth eased to 0.4%. January-August investment fell 7.2%, including a 19.9% decline in property development investment. The cumulative decline widened from 6.7% in January-July. This is not an August-only growth rate: it describes spending over eight months. The divergence from output remains the central demand-side concern.
PMI improved without crossing into expansion
Manufacturing PMI rose 0.6 points to 49.8, still below the 50-point threshold. New orders reached 50.6 and production 50.4, offering a more encouraging signal within the headline survey. Non-manufacturing activity remained at 49.0. The surveys suggest selective improvement rather than a broad-based acceleration across the economy.
Inflation picked up modestly
CPI rose 0.8% year over year and PPI increased 3.8%. PPI also rose 0.4% month over month. Firmer prices alongside slower retail growth are not, by themselves, evidence of stronger real household consumption.
Trade remained a separate source of strength
Nominal RMB goods trade grew 19.8% year over year. Exports reached RMB 2,727.4 billion and imports RMB 1,918.1 billion. These are not US-dollar figures: align currency and reporting periods before comparing this release with a downloaded trade series.
Reporting periods and interpretation
GDP growth of 4.7% covers January-June 2026, the latest available GDP period at publication. China does not publish an official monthly GDP series. Investment excludes rural households and is cumulative; other activity and price readings above refer to August. Growth rates are year over year unless specified. PMI is an index, not a growth rate.
