China Air Conditioner Exports: Production Trends and Destination Markets

China exported 3.69 million air conditioners in August 2026, up 27.5% from a year earlier, while domestic production fell 9.2%. Export shipments nevertheless declined from July. The rebound in annual growth deserves attention, but does not yet establish a broad recovery.

Annual export growth rebounded while production contracted

July exports were 3.81 million units, with official annual growth of -0.7%. August shipments were lower at 3.69 million units, yet annual growth accelerated to +27.5%. The two comparisons have different baselines: a positive year-on-year reading does not mean shipments increased from the previous month.

Production fell from 18.034 million units in July to 14.952 million in August, a calculated -17.1% monthly change. The separately published NBS comparable-scope annual rate was −9.2%.

Production history and CSV · Official production growth · Export quantity · Official export growth

Production includes units manufactured for export; it is not domestic sales. Shipments can also come from earlier production. The divergence is consistent with several possible explanations, including delivery timing and inventory movements, but these series alone cannot distinguish between them or measure domestic demand.

Separate finished machines from parts

The national export-quantity series follows the customs bulletin’s air-conditioner commodity category. Product-level trade data answers a different question: which equipment and components are being shipped, and to which markets? HS 8415 includes equipment and parts; HS 841510 is a narrower equipment category, while HS 841590 covers parts. Their dollar values must not be added to national unit counts.

ProductExport valueYoY
HS 841510 · Air conditioning machines$8.85B-13.9%
HS 841590 · Parts$7.48B+3.1%

Over the matched seven-month period, machine export value declined 13.9%, while parts increased +3.1%. That split adds context to the August national rebound: a stronger monthly quantity reading does not erase the earlier decline in this equipment category’s export value.

Which markets buy the machines and parts?

Japan and Saudi Arabia lead the published January–July ranking for HS 841510. The United States leads the parts ranking. These differences are a reason to research equipment and components separately, rather than treating every air-conditioning shipment as the same market.

Data and methodology

  • National series: ChinaData’s published NBS production and GACC export datasets, through August 2026. Source quantities are in 10,000 units; the headline converts them to millions. Official annual rates are separate series, not divisions of rounded historical levels.
  • Missing data: September and October 2024 export bulletins remain gaps. Missing NBS observations are not interpolated. The official cumulative export-quantity growth rate is not available in the verified source and is not inferred here.
  • Product and destination coverage: HS 841510 and HS 841590 export values in current US dollars, January–July 2026. Annual comparisons use January–July 2025. No regional totals or August destination contributions are inferred from these rankings.
  • Updates: this article is a dated analytical snapshot. The linked datasets and trade pages can contain newer releases. New editions should update the numbers, charts and interpretation together.
