Why there are two cleaning-robot codes
China did not create a single line covering everything described commercially as a cleaning robot. It divided two existing electric vacuum-cleaner lines, preserving their classification boundaries. Annex 4, printed page 40, shows the old lines being deleted and replaced with a robot line and an “other” line in each branch.

For 85081110, both limits apply: power at or below 1,500 W and a dust bag or other dust receptacle at or below 20 litres. The 85081910 branch is the other electric vacuum-cleaner category; it should not be described simply as “large commercial robots,” because the table does not assign that customer or end-use definition.
What becomes visible after the split?
Before 2026, the predecessor totals included robots and other vacuum cleaners together. From the new classification’s effective date, researchers can distinguish trade in cleaning robots from the residual products within each branch. That separation is useful for examining whether growth in a vacuum-cleaner total reflects robotic products or the rest of the category.
The four new lines should be retained in the working dataset even when the article focuses on the two robot lines. Their relationship allows a more useful composition analysis: the share of the replacement category accounted for by cleaning robots. Dropping the two “other” lines would remove the denominator needed for that comparison.
These codes remain inside heading 8508 for vacuum cleaners. They are not evidence that every window-cleaning device, industrial cleaning system or product sold under a “robot cleaner” label belongs in the same dataset. The product’s classification, rather than its marketing description, determines inclusion.
How to build a combined export series
Report 85081110 and 85081910 separately first. A combined value can then be calculated for a common month, currency and trade direction when both series have compatible coverage. Label the result as the sum of those two Chinese codes, so readers can reproduce the calculation.
For destinations, combine the two codes within each country before calculating shares. Do not add percentage shares calculated with separate code-level denominators. Likewise, do not assume an absent observation means zero exports: a missing release, an unavailable partner or a genuine zero can produce different data states.
Quantity requires another check. Add counts only when the reported units match. Combining kilograms with numbers of items would produce a meaningless total. An implied unit value based on a valid combined count still reflects product mix and should not be presented as the selling price of a typical household robot.
Can the new series be compared with 2025?
Not by comparing 85081110 alone with the old 85081100 total. The predecessor includes other vacuum cleaners, so the scopes differ. For a broader category comparison, the official replacement relationship suggests combining 85081110 with 85081190, and separately 85081910 with 85081990. Before using that bridge, verify complete coverage and matching statistical definitions on both sides.
That reconstruction can support a vacuum-cleaner category comparison. It cannot recover how many of the older shipments were robots. Keep pre-2026 robot-specific history unavailable unless a separate, documented source supplies the missing distinction.
Which trade signals deserve attention?
The two published export series already show why they should be inspected separately. For HS 85081110, January 2026 exports were $316,489,643, compared with $494,545,408 in July, a 56.3% increase between those months. For HS 85081910, the corresponding figures were $292,717 and $101,546, a 65.3% decline. Both series were checked on September 15, 2026.
The first branch is much larger in these observations, and the second moved in the opposite direction. A combined headline would be dominated by 85081110 and could obscure that divergence. These are January-to-July endpoint comparisons, not year-on-year rates; the underlying monthly paths and subsequent revisions remain available on the linked data pages.
Useful measures include the robot share of each replacement branch, repeat shipments to major destinations, and value growth relative to quantity growth. A broadening destination base may indicate more geographically distributed shipments, but does not measure household adoption or sell-through by retailers.
