What changed in the customs classification?
The Ministry of Finance’s 2026 adjustment table introduces 84798970 and narrows the scope of 84798999, which continues to exist. This is a new national eight-digit tariff line, not a new international six-digit HS heading. The distinction matters when comparing China’s export records with another country’s import statistics: the final two digits need not describe the same product abroad.

The official notation is ex 84798999 → 84798970. Here, “ex” means only part of the old category moved. A chart that relabels all historical 84798999 exports as bionic robots would therefore overstate the market and create a false continuous series. The mapping appears on printed page 40 of Annex 4.
Why this is useful for robot export research
A broad machinery total mixes products with different customers, prices and uses. A dedicated line lets analysts ask a narrower question: how much trade is declared specifically as intelligent bionic robots? That is a better starting point for investigating this category than treating all miscellaneous machinery as a robot market.
It also changes the questions worth asking. Is export value spread across many destinations, or concentrated in a few early markets? Do destinations order repeatedly? Does quantity rise alongside value? Several consecutive months of shipments to the same markets would tell a different commercial story from one unusually large shipment followed by little activity.
The customs label should remain visible in any analysis targeting “China humanoid robot exports.” The adjustment table names intelligent bionic robots; it does not establish that the line is exclusively humanoid robots or that every product marketed as humanoid belongs here. Nor does it identify manufacturers, buyers, deployment sites or end uses.
Reading value, quantity and destination share
Start with monthly export value and the actual period available. Then inspect the quantity unit before calculating an implied unit value. Dollars divided by a count of robots can support a per-item measure; dollars divided by kilograms is a value-per-weight measure. They answer different questions and should never share a label.
Even a valid per-item customs value is not a retail price. Changes in the mix of models, shipment terms and order sizes can move the average. A rising average alongside flat quantity is worth investigating, but does not by itself demonstrate better margins or a uniform price increase.
Destination share also needs a clear denominator. A country’s share of China’s exports under this code is not that country’s share of worldwide robot demand. Use a complete, consistently filtered destination set for the same month and trade direction, rather than dividing by the sum of whichever partners happen to be available.
How much have exports grown?
The published HS 84798970 export series, checked on September 15, 2026, shows $5,433,836 in January and $33,388,249 in July. July was 6.14 times January’s value, an increase of 514.5% between those two months. That is an endpoint comparison, not year-on-year growth and not a comparison of two half-year totals.
The intervening observations matter. Exports rose to $22,485,478 in April, fell to $20,256,335 in May, and increased to $29,458,312 in June. The rise was substantial but not uninterrupted. A smooth illustrative curve would conceal the May decline.
These figures describe the currently published series, which may be revised as source coverage changes. They establish the arithmetic for the stated comparison; they do not independently validate the period or wording behind a separate media headline. The tariff adjustment itself establishes classification, not growth.
In particular, January 2026 has no January 2025 observation under this newly introduced code. Missing history is not zero trade. Month-on-month changes become useful once consecutive observations are available; same-code year-on-year comparisons become possible from 2027, subject to consistent classification and data coverage.

Read this category alongside cleaning robots under HS 85081110 and 85081910, but keep the series separate. Those products sit within vacuum-cleaner classifications and represent a different product boundary.
