The new bionic-robot line illustrates why a classification change matters. Part of the broad 84798999 machinery category moves to 84798970, while the residual code continues. Analysts gain a more specific product boundary, but cannot turn the old miscellaneous-machinery total into a historical robot series. Destination concentration, repeat shipments and quantity units matter as much as headline value growth.

A newly named customs line makes a product easier to distinguish from its neighbours. In the old classification, a fast-changing niche could be mixed with many unrelated products. After a split, researchers can examine a narrower flow, compare its destinations and ask whether shipment value and quantity move together. That is a measurement opportunity, not proof that a market has suddenly grown.
The most valuable field is often the predecessor relationship. Some old lines are deleted and replaced by two new lines; others survive with a smaller scope. These cases require different historical comparisons. Even an unchanged code number may describe a changed product basket, so matching numbers alone is not enough to establish comparability.
For complete replacements, combining the new branches may help reconstruct the broader old category. For a partial carve-out, the new line and the narrowed residual may provide a similar bridge. Either approach requires consistent months, trade directions, currency and coverage. Neither can recover an unobserved historical component from an aggregate total.
Product scope is equally important. A fuel classification does not certify emissions savings. A wafer thickness threshold does not identify a fabrication node. A wireless-router code does not reveal the manufacturer or Wi-Fi standard. Useful analysis connects what customs statistics actually measure to the commercial question without silently substituting one for the other.
Once consistent observations are available, the next step is to examine monthly values, quantities and destination shares together. Missing observations must remain distinct from zero trade. Small starting values can produce large percentage changes, and a change in average value per item can reflect product mix. These checks make the new categories useful for research beyond the initial announcement.

The State Council Tariff Commission announcement makes the 2026 tariff adjustments effective on January 1, 2026.
These are Chinese national eight-digit tariff lines. Do not assume that the same eight digits have the same product definition in another country.
The official table uses ex to indicate that only part of a predecessor code moves to the new line. It is not a prefix entered into a trade-data query.
Not from a same-code 2025 baseline: the new lines did not yet exist. Broader predecessor comparisons require a documented classification bridge and consistent coverage. Missing history must not be treated as zero.
