The snapshot refreshes after a promoted release and site rebuild. The dated analysis below remains tied to its stated source period.
China lithium-ion battery exports were $6.78 billion in August 2026, down 5.2% year on year and 27.5% from July in the published HS 85076000 customs-value series. Germany was the largest reported destination, receiving about 19.8% of the month's value.
These dollar-value results do not contradict a separate report of rising energy-storage or power-battery exports in GWh. Customs value, battery capacity and application-specific industry statistics have different definitions. They must remain separate unless compatible source coverage is established.
Which battery exports are being measured?
The HS 85076000 lithium-ion accumulator page provides the national tariff-line starting point. Its broader international six-digit parent is HS 850760. The parent and child overlap; do not add their export values together.
This customs category does not separate every battery used in vehicles, stationary storage or consumer electronics. A destination's imported battery value cannot therefore be labelled its energy-storage deployment or EV battery demand without additional evidence.
Monthly revenue fell after July's higher value
| Reference month | Exports, USD billion |
|---|---|
| August 2025 | 7.15 |
| June 2026 | 8.69 |
| July 2026 | 9.35 |
| August 2026 | 6.78 |
The August month-on-month decline is larger than the year-on-year decline. That makes both baselines useful. A July comparison describes recent shipment timing; the same month one year earlier provides a seasonal anchor. Neither alone establishes a permanent change in battery demand.
Possible explanations include shipment timing, prices, product mix and destination demand. The aggregate customs series does not identify their separate contributions. It would be premature to attribute the decline entirely to cheaper cells or one country's policy change.
Germany, the United States and India
August exports to Germany were $1.34 billion, compared with $891 million to the United States and $689 million to India. The three partners together accounted for roughly 43.1% of the month's value.
Reported destinations describe customs trade routing. They do not directly measure final installations, local manufacturing input consumption or registrations. For an exposure study, retain the monthly partner values and compare their persistence across several releases.
Why GWh and dollars can move differently
A GWh series measures physical energy capacity within a stated reporting population. A customs-value series measures declared monetary value. Prices, chemistry, pack configuration and the share of cells versus other accumulator products can alter their relationship.
Industry reports that distinguish power and energy-storage batteries should keep their own source, application definitions, periods and units. Their percentage changes must not be used as the headline growth rate for this broad USD customs line. The same applies to production capacity, actual output and batteries installed in vehicles: these are different stages of the supply chain.
The EV sales guide explains comparable problems for vehicles. Manufacturer exports, customs departures and overseas retail sales can occur in different reporting periods.
Follow materials and downstream equipment together
The clean-energy trade hub connects batteries with EVs, solar and grid equipment. The critical minerals hub provides upstream lithium, graphite, nickel and cobalt research. This allows analysts to examine related stages without summing their overlapping trade values as one market size.
For downloads, use the hub's published trend CSV or the product page's available data options. API documentation describes access to published series. For an exact partner-by-month extract, request a lithium-ion battery export file.
FAQ
Can this customs code isolate energy-storage battery exports?
No. A separate compatible application-specific source is required.
Does lower export value mean less battery capacity shipped?
Not necessarily. Physical capacity, prices and mix can move differently. Dollar values alone cannot establish a change in GWh.
