China Digital Economy Data: Scope & Supply Chains

Use technology datasets for 5G, R&D, and innovation context.
China's digital economy is not captured by a single universally comparable total. Different studies include different combinations of communications, software, platforms and the use of digital technology in traditional industries. An estimate that includes digitally enabled manufacturing will be broader than GDP for information-technology services.

Define the denominator before quoting market size
The IT services GDP series is a national-accounts measure within its stated sector boundary. The e-commerce comparison describes a different activity. Transaction value or gross merchandise value includes the value of goods sold; it is not the same as a platform's revenue or economic value added.
Adding e-commerce transactions to digital-services GDP double-counts activity and mixes incompatible concepts. A national digital-economy estimate should retain the issuing institution, reference year and definition. Currency conversions also need a stated exchange-rate or purchasing-power method.
Infrastructure is an input, not a GDP total
The fiber-optic network and 5G station guide help describe connectivity. Network length and installed stations do not measure online spending, cloud revenue or the number of unique internet users.
Infrastructure can support productivity, but the causal question requires more than two rising national series. Adoption, skills, organisational change and the quality of services all affect the commercial result. Urban and rural conditions may also differ substantially from the national average.
Computing trade adds a supply-chain perspective
The advanced-manufacturing hub links computing equipment, semiconductors and communications components. These customs categories help identify demand for physical equipment, while covering both digital services and other uses.
Trade values cannot isolate cloud services or AI-specific revenue. Customs records follow goods crossing borders; many digital services are supplied without a physical shipment. A server assembled abroad may also contain components previously exported separately, creating another double-counting risk.
Build a research table with compatible measures
For each indicator, record whether it measures value added, transactions, company revenue, infrastructure or goods trade. Keep currencies and statistical years explicit. Compare trends within a series before comparing levels across sources.
Use the linked dataset pages for published coverage and source notes, then consult API documentation for repeatable extraction. This approach supports a digital-economy investigation without relying on an undated trillion-dollar headline whose scope cannot be reproduced.
