Explore the commodity and country data β
The snapshot refreshes after a promoted release and site rebuild. The dated analysis below remains tied to its stated source period.
China integrated-circuit exports reached $33.56 billion in August 2026, up 89.6% from August 2025 in the published HS 8542 customs-value series. The same month's value was 13.5% below July. The combination matters: a strong year-on-year increase does not mean exports accelerated from the previous month.
This edition interprets the August release. The current-release panel above follows the promoted data snapshot; later observations should be read with their own reference month rather than treated as a revision of this dated analysis.
What HS 8542 covers
Electronic integrated circuits, HS 8542, is a broad heading. Memory chips and processor/controller categories sit within it. Adding those children to the parent total counts the same trade twice. Use the heading for a broad IC view and its subheadings to investigate the composition.
Customs USD value measures the declared value of exports. It is not chip production, semiconductor company revenue, or domestic value added. Imported components can be processed and re-exported; a large export value alone cannot establish technological self-sufficiency.
August versus the preceding months
| Reference month | China IC exports, USD billion |
|---|---|
| August 2025 | 17.70 |
| June 2026 | 38.26 |
| July 2026 | 38.80 |
| August 2026 | 33.56 |
The August annual comparison is large, but June and July were higher in absolute dollar terms. A claim of uninterrupted acceleration would therefore miss the latest monthly movement. Compare several months and cumulative periods before interpreting one release as a lasting change in demand.
The memory-chip analysis adds product detail. Memory exports reached $25.48 billion in August, roughly 75.9% of the broad IC heading's value for that month. This is a composition measure within exports, not China's share of worldwide memory production.
Where the exports went
Hong Kong accounted for 48.5% of August HS 8542 export value, followed by South Korea at 13.9% and Taiwan at 12.4%. Those three reported partners represented about 74.8% of the month's total.
A reported destination is not necessarily the final manufacturing location or consumer market. Hong Kong's role in distribution and re-export means that its share should not be described as local chip consumption. Partner concentration is a useful signal for logistics and supply-chain research, with that limitation retained.
Can export value and chip quantity diverge?
Yes, but a defensible calculation needs a matching physical unit and complete observations. The published HS4 aggregate used here does not provide a verified comparable quantity series. This page therefore does not infer chip counts, prices per chip or a value-versus-volume growth differential from dollar values alone.
At more detailed tariff lines, quantities may be available. Their units and product mix must be checked before aggregation. A shift toward higher-value products can move an aggregate value-per-unit measure without establishing that individual chip prices rose by the same amount.
Research the wider semiconductor supply chain
The advanced-manufacturing hub connects ICs with fabrication equipment, wafers, computing hardware and robotics. Those categories overlap in their industrial use but have distinct customs definitions. Hardware trade supports many applications; it should not all be labelled AI revenue.
For data access, open the HS 8542 export table, use the hub's available trend CSV, or consult API documentation. For a tailored country-by-month file, request IC export research.
FAQ
Is HS 8542 the same as all China semiconductor exports?
No. It covers electronic integrated circuits. Semiconductor equipment, wafers and other devices occupy other categories.
Is Hong Kong's export share a consumption share?
No. These are China-reported destination values. Distribution and re-export can separate the reported partner from final use.
